Approved water alarms for homes and properties

For new builds and kitchen renovations, the new industry regulations, effective from 1 January 2026, require approved water alarms to be installed at all water-connected appliances. The regulations have been introduced because modern kitchens contain more installations where leaks can occur without being detected immediately. Insurance companies take these requirements into account in their assessments, making it important that the installation is carried out correctly and that the equipment is tested and approved in accordance with applicable standards.

Kitchen leakage risks

A brief overview of the new regulations

Since 1 January 2026, Säker Vatten’s new industry regulations, Safe Water Installation 2026:1, have been in effect. The new regulations introduce stricter requirements for protection against water damage in kitchens and now require active protection.

A moisture sensor must be installed under the sink, positioned on the waterproof layer or in a collection tray. The moisture sensor must be connected to a leakage unit, water safety unit or water alarm. These products must be type-approved in accordance with the new CR 139 test method. A water alarm without this approval does not comply with the new industry regulations.

RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) is responsible for type approval of the products in accordance with the new test method. The requirement has a broad scope and applies not only to new builds and renovations, but also when individual products are replaced, for example when replacing a mixer tap or dishwasher.

  • Type-approved water alarms must be installed in new builds and kitchen renovations.
  • Water alarms must be installed where leaks may occur, e.g. under the kitchen sink and dishwasher.
  • A waterproof insert or collection tray and a water alarm are required under water-connected equipment.
  • Water safety units are recommended to protect the entire property.
